DOOM: The Dark Ages Revelations DLC Release Date, Features & Gameplay

DOOM The Dark Ages Revelations – The fight against Hell is far from over. After reinventing the classic DOOM formula with brutal melee combat, heavy shield mechanics, and its unforgettable medieval sci-fi setting, DOOM The Dark Ages Revelations is about to get its biggest expansion yet.

Launching on July 7, 2026, DOOM: The Dark Ages – Revelations arrives on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. According to id Software, this isn’t just another DLC. It’s a massive expansion that feels closer to a full sequel.

Players can expect 10 to 14 hours of gameplay, featuring an all-new story campaign, expanded exploration, tougher enemies, and a huge amount of post-game content designed for veteran Slayers.

The Chain Spear Changes Everything

The Shield Saw completely changed how players approached combat in DOOM: The Dark Ages, turning the Doom Slayer into an unstoppable fortress.

However, Revelations flips that formula almost immediately.

Early in the campaign, the Slayer loses his shield and must rely on an entirely new weapon—the Chain Spear.

Instead of focusing on defense, the Chain Spear brings back the fast-paced movement that many fans loved in DOOM Eternal, while still fitting the heavier combat style introduced in The Dark Ages.

Even better, the weapon changes its form depending on how you use it.

Players can use it as:

  • A glaive for close-range slashes and parries
  • A trident to hook enemies and swing across arenas
  • A massive spike for devastating ground slams similar to the Sentinel Hammer

At first, the weapon may feel slower or weaker than expected. Fortunately, that changes as you progress.

Its extensive upgrade tree unlocks powerful mobility skills, projectile reflection, faster dodges, and brutal new Glory Kill animations. Eventually, players can freely switch between the Shield Saw and Chain Spear, creating a flexible combat style that combines defense with relentless aggression.

Six Massive Maps with Metroidvania Exploration

Instead of relying entirely on linear level design, Revelations introduces stronger Metroidvania-inspired exploration.

The expansion includes six enormous locations:

  • Proving Grounds
  • Hell’s Core
  • Osseous
  • Chasm of Xal’Goroth
  • Uprising
  • Purgatory

Among them, Purgatory serves as the DLC’s central hub.

As the story progresses, new pathways, secrets, and puzzle areas become available. Rather than feeling repetitive, backtracking rewards players with hidden arenas, collectibles, and additional challenges that were previously inaccessible.

Interestingly, id Software says nearly 30% of the DLC’s content only becomes available after finishing the main story, giving completionists plenty of reasons to jump back.

Deadlier Demons Meet Faster Combat

A faster Slayer naturally requires smarter enemies.

Because of that, id Software rebuilt much of the enemy AI around the Chain Spear’s mobility.

Players will encounter several terrifying new demons, including:

  • Cosmic Elemental
  • Warlock
  • Nightmare Whiplash
  • Nightmare Revenant

Meanwhile, familiar enemies return with dangerous upgrades.

Expect stronger versions of:

  • Elemental Hell Knights
  • Buzzsaws
  • Agaddon Hammer enemies
  • Archvile

The Archvile also introduces an interesting twist. Its summoned demons are especially vulnerable to the Chain Spear, encouraging players to prioritize targets instead of simply charging into battle.

The update also improves the game’s gore system.

Enemy stagger windows now last slightly longer, allowing players to chain together multiple Glory Kills for even more satisfying combat sequences.

Revelations Expands DOOM’s Lore

If you’re invested in DOOM’s story, Revelations delivers some of the biggest lore reveals in the franchise.

The expansion explores the origins of Argent Energy, including the horrifying beginnings of the soul factories introduced in DOOM Eternal.

Several familiar characters also return.

Nika Futterman reprises her role as Khan Maykr, while Darin De Paul returns to voice new story content that appears connected to the mysterious figure known as The Wretch.

The Codex system has also received a complete overhaul.

Instead of simple information dumps, players will discover detailed journal entries, intercepted communications, and personal records that reveal the motivations, fears, and history of important characters.

The story also explores major events like the Sentinel Civil War, surprising appearances from the Slayer’s family, and even the return of his beloved rabbit, Daisy.

Together, these moments help bridge the gap between DOOM: The Dark Ages and DOOM (2016).

Ripatorium 3.0 Delivers the Ultimate Endgame

The campaign isn’t the end.

In fact, around 40% of the expansion focuses on endgame content.

The biggest challenge comes in the form of an all-new Uber Boss.

Defeating this enemy unlocks the Master Arenas, which are harder versions of existing combat arenas designed for highly skilled players.

Alongside the DLC, every player also receives the free Ripatorium 3.0 update.

The upgraded combat simulator introduces three additional maps:

  • Hell’s Core
  • Osseous
  • Classic DOOM Hell

Customization has also been expanded dramatically.

Players can now:

  • Build custom enemy encounters
  • Save and share arena setups using access codes
  • Enable instant respawns
  • Create endless enemy waves
  • Customize health and Berserk pickups
  • Practice using every new weapon and demon from the DLC

For players chasing higher difficulty or experimenting with builds, Ripatorium 3.0 adds almost unlimited replay value.

Final Verdict

DOOM: The Dark Ages – Revelations looks like much more than a traditional expansion.

By temporarily taking away the Slayer’s iconic Shield Saw and replacing it with the versatile Chain Spear, id Software successfully introduces a fresh combat style without abandoning the brutal gameplay that defines the series.

Combined with larger environments, smarter enemies, deeper lore, and an impressive amount of endgame content, Revelations could become one of DOOM’s most ambitious DLC releases to date.

Whether you’re swinging across the Chasm of Xal’Goroth, uncovering hidden secrets inside Purgatory, or surviving the brutal Master Arenas, one thing is clear:

Hell isn’t ready for what’s coming next.
